Whoop has recently revised its upgrade policy regarding the Whoop 5.0 fitness tracker, eventually responding to customer backlash over its initial terms. Initially, the company announced that existing members wishing to acquire the new tracker could either extend their subscriptions by a year or pay an upgrade fee of $49 ($79 for the EKG sensor-equipped model). This approach raised eyebrows as it contradicted Whoop’s previous promise of free hardware upgrades for members who had been subscribed for at least six months, especially in light of their higher annual subscription fees, which range from $199 to $359.
In response to the growing dissatisfaction, Whoop issued a clarification via a Reddit post, unveiling a more user-friendly upgrade policy. Under the new terms, members with more than 12 months left on their subscriptions qualify for a complimentary upgrade to the Whoop 5.0 or can receive a refund if they have already paid the fee. Moreover, those with fewer than 12 months remaining can extend their subscription to receive the upgrade at no extra cost.
The company’s adjustments were presented as a recognition of consumer feedback, though it hinted that the previous policy shift was part of a broader transition from flexible short-term subscriptions to a more rigid model offering only 12- and 24-month plans. Whoop acknowledged that an earlier blog post mistakenly stated that members with just six months of membership would receive a free upgrade, clarifying that this was never intended as official policy.
The revised upgrade terms elicited mixed reactions on the Whoop subreddit. Some users celebrated the changes as a positive move for the community, while others remained sceptical, pointing out that the previous policy had been in place for a considerable time and expressing concerns over a lack of transparency from the company. Additionally, several users voiced frustration over narrowly missing the deadline for a complimentary upgrade, highlighting issues with the cutoff time for eligible subscriptions.
Overall, Whoop’s shift in policy reflects an effort to balance customer expectations with its business model, though the path forward may require further adjustments to ensure member satisfaction.
