Mistral AI, the French enterprise responsible for the AI assistant Le Chat and several foundational models, is recognized as one of the most promising tech startups in France and stands out as a potential competitor to OpenAI in Europe. Nevertheless, its global market presence remains relatively modest when compared to its impressive $6 billion valuation.
The recent debut of its chat assistant on mobile app platforms has generated considerable excitement, especially in France. In a television interview prior to the AI Action Summit in Paris, French President Emmanuel Macron encouraged viewers to, “Download Le Chat, developed by Mistral, instead of ChatGPT from OpenAI or any alternatives.”
While this surge of attention is promising, Mistral AI still encounters challenges in vying against major players like OpenAI while maintaining its identity as “the world’s greenest and foremost independent AI lab.”
What Is Mistral AI?
Founded in 2023, Mistral AI has acquired substantial funding with the goal to “democratize frontier AI.” While this does not directly target OpenAI, it signifies the company’s commitment to transparency in AI development.
Mistral’s alternative to ChatGPT, Le Chat, is now accessible on both iOS and Android platforms. Its mobile launch resulted in 1 million downloads within just two weeks, securing the top position for free downloads on the iOS App Store in France.
In addition to Le Chat, Mistral AI offers a variety of models, including:
- Mistral Large 2, the updated large language model replacing Mistral Large.
- Pixtral Large, revealed in 2024, is a new addition to the Pixtral series of multimodal models.
- Codestral, a generative AI model designed for coding.
- “Les Ministraux,” a collection of models tailored for edge devices, such as smartphones.
- Mistral Saba, which specializes in the Arabic language.
In March 2025, Mistral AI launched Mistral OCR, an optical character recognition (OCR) API that transforms any PDF into a text file for easier ingestion by AI models.
Who Are the Founders of Mistral AI?
The trio of founders for Mistral AI boast extensive experience in AI research at prominent tech firms based in the U.S., many of which have operations in Paris. CEO Arthur Mensch previously worked at Google’s DeepMind, while CTO Timothée Lacroix and Chief Scientist Guillaume Lample are alumni of Meta.
Notable co-founding advisors include Jean-Charles Samuelian-Werve (also serving on the board), Charles Gorintin from health insurance startup Alan, and former digital minister Cédric O, who has faced controversy due to his past involvement.
Are Mistral AI’s Models Open Source?
Not all of them. Mistral AI distinguishes between its premium models, whose weights are not available for commercial use, and its free models, which do offer weights under the Apache 2.0 license.
Among the free models is Mistral NeMo, developed in collaboration with Nvidia, which the startup open-sourced in July 2024.
How Does Mistral AI Generate Revenue?
Although many of Mistral AI’s services are provided for free or feature free tiers, the firm intends to monetize its offerings through Le Chat’s paid subscription plans. Launched in February 2025, the Pro tier of Le Chat is priced at $14.99 per month.
For its B2B operations, Mistral AI monetizes its premium models via APIs with usage-based pricing. Companies have the option to license these models, and the company likely benefits from strategic partnerships that were highlighted at the Paris AI Summit.
Overall, Mistral AI’s revenue is reportedly still in the eight-digit range according to various sources.
What Partnerships Has Mistral AI Established?
In 2024, Mistral AI secured a partnership with Microsoft, which included a strategic agreement for distributing its AI models via Microsoft’s Azure platform along with a €15 million investment. The U.K.’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) quickly determined that the agreement did not warrant investigation due to its modest size, though it did attract some criticism within the EU.
In January 2025, Mistral AI entered into a deal with the press agency Agence France-Presse (AFP) that allows Le Chat to access the agency’s comprehensive text archive dating back to 1983.
Additionally, Mistral AI has formed strategic alliances with France’s military and job agency, as well as collaborations with the German defense-tech firm Helsing, IBM, Orange, and Stellantis.
How Much Funding Has Mistral AI Raised So Far?
As of February 2025, Mistral AI has raised around €1 billion in funding, approximately $1.04 billion at the current conversion rate. This figure includes a mix of debt financing and several rapid succession equity financing rounds.
In June 2023, prior to the launch of its first models, Mistral AI completed a record-breaking $112 million seed funding round, led by Lightspeed Venture Partners. Reports from that time indicated that this seed funding round — the largest in Europe — positioned the newly established startup at a valuation of $260 million.
Other investors participating in this seed round included Bpifrance, Eric Schmidt, Exor Ventures, First Minute Capital, Headline, JCDecaux Holding, La Famiglia, LocalGlobe, Motier Ventures, Rodolphe Saadé, Sofina, and Xavier Niel.
Just six months later, Mistral AI raised a Series A funding round of €385 million ($415 million at that time), attributing a $2 billion valuation to the company. The round was led by Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), with contributions from existing investor Lightspeed and others like BNP Paribas, CMA-CGM, Conviction, Elad Gil, General Catalyst, and Salesforce.
The $16.3 million convertible investment made by Microsoft in Mistral AI as part of their February 2024 partnership was structured as an extension of the Series A, suggesting that the valuation remained unchanged.
In June 2024, Mistral AI secured €600 million in a combination of equity and debt (approximately $640 million based on exchange rates at that time). This anticipated funding round was spearheaded by General Catalyst, achieving a $6 billion valuation and attracting notable investors such as Cisco, IBM, Nvidia, Samsung Venture Investment Corporation, among others.
What Might a Mistral AI Exit Entail?
Mistral is “not for sale,” declared Mensch in January 2025 during the World Economic Forum in Davos. “Naturally, [an IPO is] the goal.”
This statement aligns with the substantial funding the startup has acquired thus far; a sale may not yield sufficient returns for its investors and could raise sovereignty issues concerning the acquirer.
Nonetheless, the only way to put an end to continual acquisition speculation is to scale its revenue to levels that would begin to validate its nearly $6 billion valuation. Regardless, keep watching for developments.
