Waymo and Uber Grant Select Riders Early Access to Atlanta’s Robotaxi Service

by admin

Waymo and Uber are set to introduce their robotaxi service in Atlanta, inviting select individuals who registered for an early access waitlist earlier this year. This initiative is part of the lead-up to their broader public launch planned for summer.

Participants chosen for this trial will receive notifications through the Uber app and email. Those opting for the robotaxi experience are encouraged to provide feedback during and after their rides. To sweeten the deal, riders will be rewarded with $10 in Uber credits after their inaugural Waymo journey.

Atlanta becomes the second city to offer the “Waymo on Uber” service, following the launch in Austin earlier this spring. The partnership between Uber and Waymo, which began with the announcement in September, aims to establish a robotaxi service in Austin and Atlanta by early 2025. Users of the Uber app exclusively will be able to book rides in Waymo’s fleet, which features autonomous Jaguar I-PACE vehicles.

As with previous cities where Waymo has launched, including Los Angeles, Phoenix, and San Francisco, the service area in Atlanta is expected to expand over time. The initial operational zone for the robotaxi service encompasses 65 square miles, covering popular areas such as downtown, Buckhead, and Capitol View.

The collaboration delineates responsibilities between Uber and Waymo: Uber is tasked with charging, maintaining, and cleaning the autonomous vehicles, as well as overseeing service access through its app. Meanwhile, Waymo will concentrate on the technology and the autonomous driving operations, which includes assisting riders.

In summary, as these tech giants take steps towards integrating driverless vehicles into urban transport, users in Atlanta are set to be among the first to experience the future of mobility through their partnership.
