Walkstar: The Innovative iOS App That Pauses Your Music When You Stop Moving

by admin

While the market is saturated with pedometer and step-counting applications, a new contender has emerged with an exciting twist. Walkstar debuted on the App Store this past Tuesday, incorporating a fun feature that syncs your favorite tracks with your movements. When you stop, the music dims, serving as an excellent incentive for those keen on staying active.

The moment you commence walking or running for at least 10 seconds, the music starts to play. If you momentarily pause, the music pauses as well—resuming as soon as you take off again.

The app’s creator, Greg Gardner, previously developed Launcher, a widget that allows iPhone users to open apps, carry out actions, or visit websites with a single tap.

In an interaction with TechCrunch, Gardner revealed that the inspiration for Walkstar came when he saw someone on the internet who had merged an old Sony Walkman with a pedometer, allowing the device to play music exclusively while the user walked. (We regret that we couldn’t find the original post.)

“I found that idea incredibly inventive and figured that a similar effect could likely be achieved using an iPhone app, creating a great motivational tool to inspire more walking,” Gardner remarked.

One particularly engaging feature of Walkstar is its retro interface, transforming your smartphone into a vibrant portable cassette player, reminiscent of classic Walkmans. As a nostalgic bonus, a tape-hiss sound accompanies music playback.

Additional features include Game Center integration for accessing leaderboards and achievements. Users can also take advantage of a Live Activity widget to monitor step counts and distances, along with Shortcuts integration for easily starting and stopping walking sessions.

Walkstar is available for free download, but there’s also a Premium subscription option for those who wish to personalize the app with vibrant icons and cassette artwork. Premium users can also view detailed analytics, including their total step count and historical walking data.

Looking ahead, Gardner intends to roll out more features that will enable users to share their achievements and compete with friends. If the app proves successful, he may explore the creation of an Android version as well.

Currently, it’s worth mentioning that Walkstar is exclusively compatible with Apple services such as Apple Music, Apple Podcasts, Apple Books, and iTunes. Additionally, users can enjoy music stored on their devices through the Apple Music app.

Gardner is also considering adding more music-streaming integration, with Spotify being the top priority. A beta version that includes Spotify is currently awaiting approval in the App Store.

“I’m hopeful it will receive approval in the coming months,” Gardner expressed.
