Visa and Mastercard Launch AI-Enhanced Shopping Experience

by admin

Artificial intelligence (AI) is making significant strides beyond its traditional realms, as major players in the financial sector, namely Visa and Mastercard, delve into this technology. On a recent Wednesday, Visa unveiled its “Intelligent Commerce” initiative, designed to leverage AI for shopping on behalf of customers based on their specified preferences.

AI agents will facilitate purchases, allowing users to set their spending limits while Visa manages transactions according to these parameters. The company aims to enhance shopping experiences by collaborating with a variety of tech firms and startups, including industry giants such as IBM, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Samsung, focusing on creating a more personal, secure, and convenient shopping environment.

In tandem with Visa’s announcement, Mastercard introduced its own initiative, “Agent Pay,” which empowers AI agents to not only browse but also make purchases online. This service aims to enrich generative AI conversations with personalised payment solutions integrated into the recommendations and insights provided on conversational platforms. An example highlighted features a 30-year-old planning her birthday party, where an AI agent curates outfit choices from local and online stores tailored to her tastes, even considering weather conditions, and suggests optimal payment methods.

Mastercard is also partnering with Microsoft to enhance this “agentic commerce” approach, along with other significant collaborations aimed at advancing AI-driven shopping technologies.

Visa and Mastercard are not alone in this venture; Amazon recently began testing its AI shopping agent dubbed “Buy for Me,” which assists users in making online purchases. Similarly, technology firms like OpenAI and Google have introduced agents to help facilitate shopping experiences on various platforms. OpenAI even announced updates to its ChatGPT search tool, aiming to refine the online shopping journey.

The integration of AI into shopping and payment processes marks a transformative phase for consumers, promising to streamline and personalise their purchasing experiences. As these financial giants race to harness AI’s potential, the landscape of commerce is poised for significant evolution, offering a glimpse into a future where AI plays an integral role in everyday transactions.
