Virtuix Set to Launch Its Virtual Reality Treadmill in September

by admin

It’s an exciting time for virtual reality (VR) accessories. Just one hour following Roto VR’s launch news of its $799 rotating gaming chair, Virtuix officially announced a September 10 release for the much-anticipated Omni One VR treadmill. The unveiling is particularly noteworthy since the system, priced at $2,595 plus delivery fees, has been under development for over a decade.

Indeed, our previous coverage on the device was titled, “A decade later, this VR treadmill is finally ready to ship,” published on April 3 of the previous year. In the realm of technology, progress can appear to accelerate at breakneck speed or crawl at a snail’s pace, with hardware startups often experiencing the latter.

Through its journey spanning approximately ten years, Virtuix has garnered significant traction. Addressing the challenge of VR locomotion—how to make users feel like they are moving without actual movement, which can lead to dizziness—remains a crucial issue.

The trajectory of Virtuix has paralleled an increasing fascination with mixed reality technologies, spotlighted by giants like Oculus/Meta, HTC, and now Apple. The startup has successfully amassed $40 million in funding, thanks to both venture capital and private backers. The Omni One gained exceptional recognition by being featured as a prototype in Steven Spielberg’s movie adaption of “Ready Player One.”

The mechanism behind Omni One is surprisingly straightforward. It eschews the need for a mechanical belt and instead opts for a passive design. Users put on specialized shoes and move by sliding their feet on a curved platform.

Jan Goetgeluk, Virtuix’s CEO, expressed eagerness for the official release: “With September 10 marked as the launch, we look forward to welcoming enthusiasts to the Omni One universe,” he remarked in a statement. “The beta community has provided exceptionally positive feedback, which only heightens our anticipation to bring Omni One to the market and revolutionize gaming for individuals everywhere.”

According to Virtuix, the pre-order phase resulted in 3,000 Omni One units sold.
