United Airlines is enhancing its mobile applications for both iOS and Android platforms by introducing several new features aimed at improving the travel experience, particularly in light of the ongoing partial government shutdown that has resulted in understaffed TSA checkpoints.
One key addition in the updated app is the ability for travellers to view estimated security wait times at major United hub airports, including Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, New York/Newark, San Francisco, and Washington D.C. This feature allows users to check expected wait times for different security lanes, such as standard screening and TSA PreCheck, thus aiding them in planning their arrival at the airport more effectively.
Jason Birnbaum, United’s Chief Information Officer, emphasised the company’s appreciation for TSA agents and highlighted the necessity of keeping customers informed about anticipated wait times during these challenging times. He stated, “Our customers rely on our mobile app for all their travel needs, and this new feature lets them know what to expect and better plan their trip.”
Additionally, the app is rolling out features designed specifically for passengers with connecting flights. Users will benefit from personalised, step-by-step directions to their next gate, including walking time estimates, real-time flight updates, and helpful tips for managing longer layovers. Notably, the app will notify passengers if United can hold their flight for those with tight connections, alleviating some travel stress.
Another valuable enhancement includes automatic rebooking assistance. Instead of queuing for assistance or searching manually for alternatives after a flight delay or cancellation, the app will automatically provide users with rebooking options. It will also include baggage tracking and, where applicable, information about meal and hotel vouchers for disrupted travellers.
For those concerned about lost baggage, the app now integrates Apple’s “Share Item Location” feature using AirTag or other Find My network accessories, enabling users to share the location of their luggage with United’s customer service team swiftly.
Moreover, travellers will receive text alerts that feature real-time radar maps, which will signal how severe weather in one region may impact flights elsewhere.
With these updates, United Airlines aims to offer a smoother, more informed travel experience, reinforcing its commitment to utilising technology to enhance customer service and operational efficiency.
