UK’s Wayve Receives Strategic Funding from Uber to Advance Autonomous Driving Technology

by admin

Uber is making a noteworthy investment in Wayve, enhancing the London-based startup’s recent $1.05 billion Series C funding milestone. This collaboration will focus on incorporating Wayve’s AI technology into consumer vehicles with the goal of eventually integrating these vehicles into Uber’s ride-hailing network through partnerships with car manufacturers.

This announcement follows closely on the heels of Uber revealing that Cruise’s autonomous taxis will be accessible via the Uber app in 2025. It marks yet another strategic alliance in Uber’s ongoing series of partnerships aimed at incorporating autonomous driving technologies.

While specifics of the Uber-Wayve partnership remain limited, Wayve has been on a notable trajectory since its inception in Cambridge in 2017. In just a few years, it has garnered over $1.3 billion in funding from notable investors like SoftBank Group, Nvidia, and Microsoft.

Unlike traditional approaches, Wayve is pioneering a self-learning AI for autonomous navigation, drawing parallels with Tesla’s AI methods but without reliance on lidar technology. Using cameras and radar, Wayve’s AI gains an understanding of its environment, paving the way for consumer vehicles to be equipped with its advanced driver assistance systems for Level 2+ and fully autonomous Level 3 and 4 capabilities.

According to the SAE, Level 3 and 4 autonomous systems function with varying degrees of independence, with the former requiring driver intervention in certain scenarios, unlike the latter. Wayve is actively testing its technology on Jaguar I-Paces and Ford E-Transits in the U.K., with safety drivers, and is looking to expand its L2+ testing to new markets, as per a Wayve spokesperson.

Though details remain sparse, Wayve has articulated that the partnership aims to integrate Wayve-powered self-driving vehicles into Uber’s service ecosystem in the future.

Both Wayve and Uber have withheld specifics regarding the timeline for the introduction of Wayve-enabled vehicles on Uber’s platform, the extent of the vehicles’ autonomous capabilities, or the scale of Uber’s financial commitment to Wayve.

Alex Kendall, the CEO and co-founder of Wayve, has emphasized that the collaboration will significantly enhance their AI’s ability to learn from large fleets, ensuring that their autonomous vehicle (AV) technology is both safe and scalable for deployment across Uber’s global network.

Kendall also highlighted the partnership’s goal to expedite the delivery of autonomous driving technologies to consumers by working closely with vehicle manufacturers.

Uber’s CEO, Dara Khosrowshahi, expressed optimism about the partnership with Wayve, citing Wayve’s innovative AI technologies as holding significant potential in Uber’s vision for a future dominated by shared, electric, and self-driving vehicles.

Khosrowshahi remarked on the excitement surrounding Wayve’s inclusion in their push for a collaborative network with auto manufacturers to usher in the era of autonomous driving within Uber’s services.

Uber has recently been positioning itself as a prime collaborator for emerging self-driving ventures, exemplified by partnerships with Waymo in Phoenix and engagement with autonomous delivery and freight services to integrate self-driving capabilities into Uber Eats and Uber Freight.

Correction: While Wayve initially indicated to TechCrunch that it was only testing L2+ technology, it has subsequently corrected to confirm that testing includes L3 and L4 autonomous driving technologies with a human safety driver present in the U.K.
