Uber and Volkswagen Team Up to Introduce Self-Driving Electric Microbus Robotaxi Service in the U.S.

Volkswagen of America and Uber have announced an ambitious initiative to introduce a commercial robotaxi service utilizing autonomous electric vehicles, specifically the VW ID. BUZZ. This service is set to debut in various U.S. cities over the next decade, with Los Angeles being the first city targeted for a launch by late 2026.

Initially, the service will not operate without drivers. Human safety operators will be present in the autonomous vehicles before the transition to fully driverless operations expected in 2027. This allows Volkswagen’s autonomous vehicle division, Volkswagen ADMT, approximately two years to navigate regulatory processes and secure necessary permits for testing and running commercial operations in California.

Testing of these autonomous vehicles is anticipated to start later this year, contingent on receiving a permit from the California Department of Motor Vehicles, which oversees autonomous vehicle testing in the state. The California Public Utilities Commission will also play a role by permitting the commercial ride-hailing aspect of the robotaxi service.

This partnership represents a significant advancement for Volkswagen ADMT, which launched publicly in July 2023 with an autonomous vehicle test program in Austin, featuring a fleet of 10 all-electric ID. BUZZ vehicles outfitted with Mobileye’s technology. After Volkswagen and Ford withdrew support from the startup Argo, the company shifted its focus to Mobileye for its autonomous vehicle technology needs.

Volkswagen has previously expressed a disinterest in creating a dedicated ride-hailing service. However, their strategy seems to involve marketing their self-driving ID. BUZZ vehicles and related fleet management software to other enterprises, as evidenced in their collaboration with Uber.

Christian Senger, CEO of Volkswagen Autonomous Mobility, stated that the collaboration aims to redefine mobility while leveraging Volkswagen’s manufacturing abilities combined with innovative technology and insights into urban transportation. This partnership aligns with Uber’s ongoing efforts to secure collaborations with multiple autonomous vehicle companies for various applications, including ride-hailing and delivery services. Recent announcements from Uber highlight similar robotaxi initiatives with Waymo in Austin and soon in Atlanta, illustrating the growing trend towards autonomous ride services.

Overall, the alliance between Volkswagen and Uber marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of autonomous transport, setting the stage for a new era in urban mobility.
