Tumblr Migrates Over 500 Million Blogs to WordPress

by admin

Tumblr is set to transition to WordPress. Following its acquisition by Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com, in a deal worth $3 million back in 2019, efforts have been made to enhance and expand Tumblr’s platform. Automattic recently announced via a blog post on Wednesday that it plans to integrate Tumblr’s backend with WordPress.

The transition will not morph Tumblr into WordPress but will instead see Tumblr powered by WordPress’s backend.

“Our aim in acquiring Tumblr was to leverage its unique attributes and strengths. We have no intentions of diluting its essence. We appreciate Tumblr’s efficient posting mechanism and its planned trajectory. The shift we’re discussing is purely technical – shifting Tumblr’s backend to WordPress. This change will be imperceptible to our users,” indicated the blog post.

Adopting WordPress as its backend is said to bring numerous benefits, such as facilitating the integration of work across both platforms. This move allows Automattic’s developers to create tools and features applicable to both Tumblr and WordPress while enabling Tumblr to tap into the wealth of open-source projects and developments occurring on WordPress.org.

Moreover, WordPress stands to gain from the ingenuity and resources being poured into Tumblr.

However, the migration represents a significant technical undertaking as Tumblr currently hosts over half a billion blogs.

“We are facing what might be one of the biggest technical migrations the internet has seen. While some may doubt its feasibility, we are ready to meet the challenge head-on,” Automattic proclaimed confidently.

It is important to note other entities in the tech industry have also undertaken significant backend overhauls, such as Twitter and Slack, which revamped their architectural frameworks to maintain functionality and improve performance. In the past, a strategic shift in architecture to Microsoft’s technology stack was linked to the decline of Myspace.

Automattic has not shared a specific timeline or roadmap for this migration project, merely signaling their intention to transition Tumblr onto a WordPress backend eventually.

Tumblr, once acquired by Yahoo in 2013 for over $1 billion under Marissa Mayer’s leadership, with ambitions of becoming a social media behemoth, struggled in the years following against competitors like Facebook, Instagram, and Reddit.

Despite being under Automattic’s wing, Tumblr faced continuous financial downturns, incurring annual losses of approximately $30 million, according to CEO Matt Mullenweg. Even a rise in user numbers following the sale and rebranding of Twitter to X by Elon Musk didn’t significantly lift Tumblr’s revenues.

Today, Tumblr’s income is derived from digital products, advertisements, and subscription services.

Given ongoing fiscal challenges, Mullenweg made tough decisions to redirect the bulk of Tumblr’s staff to Automattic’s other ventures last year and implemented layoffs. He acknowledged the complexities of migrating Tumblr to WordPress but expressed optimism that new technologies, including AI, will simplify the process.
