Trump Dismisses Leader of National Security Agency and Cyber Command

by admin

Timothy Haugh, the recently appointed head of the National Security Agency (NSA) and Cyber Command, has been dismissed by the Trump administration, according to multiple reports. Haugh had been leading the NSA, the U.S.’s primary wiretapping and intelligence agency, for just over a year after his appointment in February 2024. In addition to his NSA role, he managed Cyber Command, which oversees offensive cyber operations against international adversaries.

The move to remove Haugh reportedly followed a meeting with right-wing activist Laura Loomer, who urged Haugh’s ousting among other national security officials during discussions with President Donald Trump at the White House. Alongside Haugh, Wendy Noble, the NSA’s deputy director, has also been dismissed.

When contacted for comment, White House spokesperson Anna Kelly referred inquiries to the Department of Defense (DoD), which oversees the NSA. A spokesperson from the DoD acknowledged the reports but stated that no further information was available at that time. In an official update, the NSA announced that Lt. Gen. William J. Hartman will serve as the acting head of both the NSA and Cyber Command, while Sheila Thomas has been appointed as acting deputy director.

The unexpected nature of Haugh’s firing has raised concerns among senior lawmakers responsible for overseeing the NSA. Mark Warner, a Democratic senator from Virginia and vice chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, expressed astonishment at the decision. Warner highlighted Haugh’s extensive service and commitment to the country, questioning how his dismissal enhances national security, particularly in light of rising cyber threats, including ongoing attacks attributed to Chinese hackers.

Warner further criticized the Trump administration for failing to hold accountable those involved in a separate incident where classified information was inadvertently shared with a journalist through a group chat among senior officials. Additionally, Jim Himes, the Democratic head of the House Intelligence Committee, conveyed his deep unease regarding Haugh’s removal.

Discussions prior to Haugh’s termination included a reported visit from Elon Musk, leading the Department of Government Efficiency under the Trump administration, who met with Haugh at the NSA headquarters in Maryland. Musk had previously suggested the need for significant changes at the agency, although specific details were not disclosed.

This abrupt leadership transition in a critical national security role underscores growing tensions and uncertainties regarding the management of U.S. intelligence and cyber operations, particularly during a period marked by escalating cyber threats. Further developments are anticipated, with the DoD promising more information as it becomes available.
