Former President Trump has initiated a federal investigation into Chris Krebs, the ex-director of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), following Krebs’ dismissal in November 2020. Trump’s action comes in the wake of Krebs publicly rebutting claims made by Trump regarding voting irregularities in the 2020 presidential election. In a newly issued order, Trump directed the Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Attorney General to scrutinise Krebs’ activities and has revoked his security clearance.
The order asserts that Krebs “falsely and baselessly denied” allegations of election rigging, claiming he improperly dismissed credible concerns regarding election integrity and vulnerabilities in voting systems. Despite the extensive claims made by Trump and his allies about election fraud, almost all related legal challenges filed after the election were unsuccessful.
CISA, established during Trump’s initial term, plays a key role in safeguarding federal cybersecurity and critical infrastructure, with a focus on election systems. During Krebs’ tenure, CISA took significant steps to address misinformation regarding election integrity, specifically addressing misinformation campaigns that were notably influenced by Russian operations in the 2016 election.
Furthermore, Trump’s order alleges that Krebs infringed upon the First Amendment by overstepping his authority in countering election-related falsehoods. This directive also extends to revoking the security clearances of staff at SentinelOne, the cybersecurity firm where Krebs currently works. A spokesperson for SentinelOne confirmed the company’s intent to cooperate with the review process concerning the security clearances of its personnel but anticipated no substantial impact on its operations as a result.
Krebs is not alone in facing repercussions from the Trump administration; other former officials critical of the administration’s actions have also had their security clearances revoked. In a related development on the same day, Trump issued another order revoking the security clearance of a former Homeland Security official who had previously authored an anonymous op-ed critical of Trump’s policies.
The events reflect ongoing tensions surrounding the Trump administration’s relationship with former officials who have diverged from its narratives, particularly regarding the legitimacy of the 2020 election outcomes.
