Rivian’s factory in Normal, Illinois, faced significant damage from an EF-1 tornado this past weekend, as confirmed by the company to TechCrunch. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported among the staff, who are currently evaluating the damage’s extent.
The tornado primarily impacted “Building 2,” where Rivian produces its R2 SUV. As a precaution, operations in this area have been halted, but Rivian anticipates resuming work within the week, as noted in an email from CEO RJ Scaringe to employees. Scaringe expressed pride in the team’s response during the emergency, highlighting their adherence to safety protocols and their efforts towards recovery.
Photos circulating online depict substantial roof damage to the facility. Despite the disruption, Rivian has not clarified whether this temporary shutdown will influence the planned rollout of the R2 SUV, which is scheduled to begin shortly.
The tornado affected a relatively new section of the factory that focuses on logistics, including the delivery of parts. According to Rivian spokesperson Marina Hoffmann, safety measures are in place, and operations related to the R2 are expected to resume this week, with production at other sites continuing as per schedule.
Rivian’s R2 SUV is pivotal for the company, which has committed substantial resources over the past five years to enhance its manufacturing efficiency. However, the firm continues to experience quarterly losses, predominantly due to investments in infrastructure intended to support future production scalability.
The company aims to sell between 20,000 to 25,000 units of the R2 by the year’s end, which would mark one of the quickest launches of a new electric vehicle (EV) in the U.S., trailing only Tesla’s Model Y. Initial production of the R2 will occur at the Normal plant alongside existing models in Rivian’s lineup, including the R1 vehicles and an electric delivery van.
Additionally, Rivian has plans for a new factory located near Atlanta, Georgia, designated for R2 production and the upcoming R3 hatchback, which was revealed unexpectedly in March 2024. Groundbreaking for this facility occurred late last year, with vertical construction anticipated to begin shortly, and production is slated to start in 2028.
The outlook for Rivian hinges heavily on the R2 SUV’s successful launch and subsequent sales, which are critical to the company’s financial recovery and growth strategy.
