Tinder’s Artificial Intelligence Photo Selector Chooses Your Most Attractive Profile Pictures Automatically

by admin

Last year, Tinder shared news about its experimental photo-choosing technology, which employs artificial intelligence to assist members in selecting their optimal profile pictures. Now known as “Photo Selector,” this feature was officially released by the Match Group’s popular dating app on Wednesday. It has been made available to all U.S. users and plans to expand internationally in the latter part of this summer.

The AI-driven Photo Selector by Tinder utilizes face detection technology and functions as envisaged. When users upload a selfie to the Tinder app, the photo generates a distinctive facial geometry. This enables the AI to recognize the user’s face and fetch images from their photo library. Similar facial recognition technology is employed by photo applications from Google and Apple, as well as numerous other apps, to identify individuals in pictures.

This service compiles a selection of 10 selfies that it predicts will be effective for a user’s profile. The artificial intelligence is programmed based on insights gained by Tinder about the elements that contribute to a strong profile photo, such as optimal lighting and composition, as told by a spokesperson to TechCrunch. The spokesperson further recommended minimizing group pictures to avoid confusion over who owns the profile.

“We trained the AI on a broad dataset to ensure it upholds our standards of inclusivity, accuracy, and demographic representation, aligning with our DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) initiatives,” said the spokesperson. This preparation includes teaching the AI to exclude images that don’t meet the guidelines, such as explicit content.

The aim behind introducing this feature is to simplify the process of selecting profile photos for users, removing the guesswork and effort required to filter through numerous selfies. A survey conducted by Tinder showed that 68% found an AI-powered photo selection tool to be beneficial, and 52% reported difficulties in choosing which images to display on their profiles.

“In today’s world, where AI touches the lives of hundreds of millions daily, we’re thrilled to harness this technology to empower our users in what has been identified as one of the trickiest aspects of online dating,” stated Tinder CEO Faye Iosotaluno.

Iosotaluno further highlighted that the technology is designed to guide users in making choices, without the AI making those decisions for them. “Our goal is to utilize AI to facilitate the dating experience… Our dedication to our users is unwavering, mirroring our approach to AI usage: at Tinder, we integrate cutting-edge technologies to foster a secure environment that encourages genuine connections,” she explained.

Recently, parent company Match has ramped up its investment in generative AI technologies. During a Reuters event last year, Mark Van Ryswyk, Tinder’s Chief Product Officer, hinted at the possibility of using generative AI to craft dating profiles. Come August 2023, the company welcomed Mark Kantor, previously with Zynga, as the new vice president of innovation, spearheading a group of engineers dedicated to advancing generative AI initiatives.
