TikTok has unveiled its inaugural image-to-video feature, dubbed “TikTok AI Alive,” which allows users to transform still images into animated videos directly within TikTok Stories. The announcement was made on Tuesday, marking a significant enhancement in the platform’s capabilities.
Accessible exclusively through TikTok’s Story Camera, the feature employs artificial intelligence to generate short videos filled with “movement, atmospheric, and creative effects.” For example, a static photo depicting a sky, clouds, and the ocean could become an animated scene where the sky changes colour, clouds drift by, and the sounds of crashing waves play in the background. Additionally, group selfies can be brought to life, highlighting gestures and expressions that capture the moment more vividly.
The introduction of TikTok AI Alive follows the company’s earlier implementation of a text-to-image AI generator, positioning the platform as a pioneer in enabling users to create videos from photographs. Competing platforms like Instagram and Snapchat have also ventured into AI-driven creative features, with Snapchat planning to follow suit by offering the ability to create videos from images in the near future.
All videos produced using TikTok AI Alive will carry an AI-generated label, ensuring viewers are aware of the content’s origins. Furthermore, the videos will include C2PA metadata, a technical standard that allows users to verify that the video was created through AI, even if shared outside TikTok.
TikTok is committed to maintaining user safety with its AI features. The company stated that all AI innovations undergo rigorous safety checks to guard against content violations. Before a video is displayed to the creator, moderation technology evaluates the uploaded image and the AI generation prompt, with the option for viewers to report videos that appear to breach the platform’s guidelines. A final safety check is also performed before an AI Alive story goes live.
To create an AI Alive video, users can access the Story Camera and select a photo from their Story Album. By tapping the AI Alive icon on the photo editing toolbar, they can easily produce engaging videos that enhance their storytelling.
