TikTok has unveiled a “Manage Topics” tool, designed to enhance user control over the content displayed on their For You feed, as revealed by the company on Friday. This feature is being introduced to users across the U.S.
This tool allows users to customize their For You feed to include more or fewer posts on specific topics.
To use this feature, head to your Settings, select “Content Preferences,” and then tap on the “Manage Topics” option. Here, you’ll be able to modify your content preferences across various categories including sports, travel, humor, current affairs, dance, and food by adjusting the slider to align with your interest in seeing more or less content related to these topics in your For You feed.
If you’re unsure about what kind of videos a category might contain, there’s an “information” button next to each topic for clarity. For example, TikTok mentions that the “Creative arts” category encompasses “painting, drawing, graphic design, and art-related tutorials.”

According to TikTok, adjusting these settings will influence the app to display more or fewer posts on the selected topics within your For You feed. This customization does not affect the content from accounts you already follow. It’s important to note that altering your feed preferences might not take immediate effect, as the app requires some time to adjust your feed based on your new selections.
Previously, TikTok introduced a refresh feature allowing users to reboot their For You feed to better educate the platform’s algorithm on their interests. This new “Manage Topics” option, however, offers a more granular approach to directly customize the feed with preferred content without having to start from scratch.
Moreover, users have the option to press and hold a video and select the “not interested” button to inform the algorithm of their disinterest in similar content. Now, this capability is extended, allowing users to actively venture into their settings and earmark the types of content they wish to exclude from their For You feed. This feature simplifies the process by eliminating the need for manually entering keywords and hashtags to filter out unwanted content.
