TikTok is stepping up its game by introducing group chat functionality, positioning itself as a competitor against established messaging giants such as Meta’s WhatsApp and Apple’s Messages. The feature, unveiled on Monday, allows for the creation of group chats with a maximum of 32 members, facilitating discussions and shared content consumption among users.
Previously, TikTok enthusiasts would resort to external messaging platforms to share and comment on TikTok videos within private groups. However, the new update empowers users to enjoy these interactions directly on TikTok’s ecosystem, enabling real-time commentary and reactions.
This move underscores TikTok’s ambition to evolve beyond its roots as a mere platform for entertainment, aiming to become a more interactive and socially engaging space where users can connect with their friends, not just anonymous viewers.
The capability for group messaging is restricted to individuals over the age of 15, with TikTok introducing specific safeguards for the protection of 16 to 17-year-old users.
Minors are subject to additional restrictions: they can only be added to group chats through a mutual follower, and if invited to a new group, the presence of at least one mutual connection is a prerequisite for joining. Furthermore, TikTok mandates that when a minor initiates a group chat, they must personally verify and accept any new participants.
Initiating a group chat is straightforward: users need only to hit the “Chat” button at the top of their inbox, select “More options,” choose the desired contacts for the chat, and then confirm by hitting “Start group chat.” To join an already formed group via an invitation, participants can simply tap the invite and then select “Join group.”
In addition to group chats, TikTok is enhancing the direct messaging experience by introducing custom stickers. This not only adds a creative and personal touch to conversations but also motivates users to design and share their own stickers, further enriching the platform’s communal vibe.
