Meta’s latest venture, Threads, is making a significant shift by transitioning from Threads.net to the more memorable Threads.com. This change is not just a rebranding; it also introduces several upgrades aimed at enhancing the user experience on the platform.
Initially launched in July 2023 on Threads.net, the app’s URL was influenced by a previous ownership of Threads.com by a different startup, which was sold to Shopify. However, in September 2024, Meta successfully acquired the domain and redirected traffic from Threads.com to Threads.net. As of today, the process is reversed; users who visit Threads.com will land directly on their Threads homepage, while Threads.net will redirect to Threads.com.
The URL shift comes as Threads boasts over 320 million active users monthly, a number disclosed by Meta in January’s earnings report. This move aims to better position Threads against competitor X, which also benefits from a straightforward URL.
In addition to this transition, Instagram head Adam Mosseri announced a suite of new features intended to improve usability, especially for creators. Users will now experience uniformity across their feeds, matching the mobile and web app interfaces. Access to saved and liked posts will also be simplified, allowing users to quickly navigate through the main menu instead of relying on pinned columns.
A particularly notable feature allows users to share Threads posts as images, streamlining the process of reposting content on platforms like Instagram. Furthermore, users can now easily create new columns for their feeds with a dedicated icon on their screens, enhancing customization.
Another update simplifies post creation: a plus button in the bottom right corner opens a new window for composing posts. Finally, a feature that allows users to locate and follow creators they followed on X has begun rolling out. To use this, users can download their X data and upload it to Threads, making the transition smoother for those switching platforms.
These enhancements reflect Meta’s commitment to refining the Threads experience, making it a more compelling option in the social media landscape.
