Threads, Meta’s microblogging platform, is experiencing rapid growth as users prefer it over competitors like X. In the company’s fourth-quarter earnings call on Wednesday, CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that Threads has reached 320 million monthly active users (MAUs), a rise from 300 million just last month. The app had 275 million monthly active users in November.
This rise in MAUs, while modest, indicates that Threads continues to be a favored choice for many amidst a crowded arena of social media platforms, including Bluesky, Mastodon, X, and others. In contrast, Bluesky has seen a decline in growth, posting less than a 10% month-over-month increase in December 2024, after a staggering 189% growth in November, as reported by analytics firm Similarweb. Currently, Bluesky boasts a total of 26.44 million users.
Moreover, Zuckerberg mentioned that Threads is seeing more than 1 million new signups daily.
To attract more users, Meta has been actively enhancing Threads with features such as post scheduling and providing insights into post views. Additionally, it appears that Meta is planning to utilize Threads’ growing popularity with a new advertising experiment set to launch in the U.S. and Japan.
During the call on Wednesday, Meta’s chief financial officer, Susan Li, also noted that Threads is rolling out various updates to its recommendation algorithms aimed at “prioritizing recent posts, highlighting content from leading creators, and ensuring users see more of the material from accounts they follow,” Li stated. The company will also continue to refine custom feeds, allowing users to curate their feeds based on personal interests.
