Shortly after Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, revealed on their Q2 2024 earnings discussion that their new social venture Threads was on the verge of hitting 200 million users, the platform achieved the landmark figure.
The head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, announced via a Threads post that the platform, seen as a competitor to Twitter, now boasts 200M active users. It took Meta merely 13 months to reach this impressive user count.
“Thrilled to announce that we’ve surpassed the 200M user milestone on @threads,” Mosseri shared. “It’s my desire that Threads will catalyze ideas that unite us, and that this remarkable community keeps on expanding.”
Threads has demonstrated robust growth. The platform, which emphasizes text-based interaction and was unveiled in July 2023, had already achieved 150M users by April 2024 and hit the 175M mark in July during its first anniversary. Another rapid increase in growth brought it to the 200M mark just one month later.
In comparison, the main competitor of Threads, X (previously known as Twitter), had over 600M monthly users by May, as per Elon Musk. Meta’s initiative to launch Threads was spurred by the downfall of the original Twitter, following Musk’s unpredictable management shifts, which pushed away many dedicated users, thus providing a new outlet for digital conversations.
Last year, Zuckerberg posited that Threads stands a “good chance” of amassing over a billion users. During the latest earnings call, the Meta CEO remarked that the platform is on a promising growth path.
“We’re moving forward steadily with the creation of what appears to be another significant social application. What’s more, we’re observing increased user engagement,” he remarked, expressing his satisfaction with the platform’s progress.
Zuckerberg also mentioned that in addition to introducing new features, efforts are being made to enhance Threads’ system for content recommendation.
