Have you ever considered the energy consumption of interacting with AI models? Julien Delavande, an engineer at Hugging Face, has, and he developed a tool designed to calculate the energy used when engaging with AI systems.

AI models significantly consume power each time they are activated, relying on GPUs and specialised chips that demand substantial electricity for their computational workloads. While it’s challenging to accurately measure this power consumption, experts predict that the increasing adoption of AI technologies will drastically escalate electricity requirements in the coming years.

The surge in energy demand to support AI has led some companies to explore environmentally harmful practices. Delavande’s tool aims to highlight this issue, prompting users to reflect on their energy consumption when using AI services. He emphasises that even minor savings can accumulate across millions of interactions, where choices such as model selection or message length can have considerable environmental repercussions.

Delavande’s innovation works alongside Chat UI, an open-source interface compatible with models like Meta’s Llama 3.3 70B and Google’s Gemma 3. This tool provides real-time estimates of the energy consumed during interactions, reporting usage in Watt-hours or Joules. It even benchmarks the energy needed against common household appliances, like microwaves and LED bulbs. For instance, requesting Llama 3.3 70B to draft a typical email uses about 0.1841 Watt-hours, which is roughly equivalent to the power consumed by a microwave in 0.12 seconds.

It’s essential to note that these estimates are approximations. Delavande does not claim absolute precision, but the tool serves as a crucial reminder of the hidden costs of technology, including chatbots.

Delavande and his team advocate for transparency regarding AI’s energy footprint, hoping to inspire similar initiatives within the open-source community. They envision a future where energy usage is as apparent as nutrition labels on food packaging.

Overall, this tool not only raises awareness about the energy consumption associated with AI interactions but also encourages users to be more mindful of their digital footprints, supporting a broader movement towards sustainable technology use.
