On just the second day of CES 2025, the line between authentic products and elaborate hoaxes is beginning to blur. Leading the charge in this peculiar competition is a product called In Case of Death.
Brought to you by Zugu, this inventive device functions as a digital dead man’s switch. It consists of an 11-inch iPad case, a smart ring, and an accompanying app. Notably, it’s packaged with a self-destructing 11-inch iPad Pro that becomes inoperable if the user passes away.
According to Zugu:
If the user’s heart rate unexpectedly stops and their body temperature and blood oxygen levels plummet, the smart ring recognizes that the user is deceased and sends a notification to the In Case of Death app. This activates the ‘Death Protections’ that the user selected when initially setting up the app.

The company emphasizes that the system can detect when the smart ring is removed, preventing unexpected iPad deactivation during routine charging. Adding a playful twist to this grim concept, Zugu offers various other options as alternatives to tablet bricking.
“Among the Death Protections are Destroy My Browser (erasing browsing history), Nuke My iPad (wiping all data), Rickroll My Loved Ones (playing the infamous Rick Astley video on loop), and Tweet My Followers,” the company details.
An example of the standard tweet says, “Going offline permanently, bestie. Literally. Don’t forget to like and subscribe to my obituary #LastPost #NoFilter #NoHeartBeat #RIPme.”
This intriguing system is priced at $1,500. You might also want to grab some screen wipes to take advantage of the complimentary shipping.
