The Scene Launches a New App to Assist New Yorkers in Discovering Restaurants and Nightlife Venues

by admin

Navigating the vast selection of nearly 25,000 eateries in New York City can seem daunting. This challenge amplifies when attempting to charm a first date or entertain visiting relatives. Addressing this dilemma, a new application made its debut recently.

An iOS-exclusive “personal dining assistant,” The Scene, employs machine learning to guide users to the best spots for dining, drinking, and dancing across NYC.

The Scene curates personalized suggestions for users based on a variety of considerations including the nature of the occasion (whether it’s for dinner, brunch, or drinks), the type of celebration (such as dates, birthdays, or anniversaries), preferred cuisines, party size, budget, specific dates, times, and preferred localities.

A distinctive aspect of The Scene is its “Vibe” filter, enabling users to pinpoint exact recommendations like “Instagram-worthy” dance clubs, rooftop dining spots, or bars known for their music, aiding in the fine-tuning of the desired atmosphere.

Following this, the app presents a list of venues complete with detailed descriptions, available reservation timings, operational hours, links to menus or websites, among other details. The Scene collaborates with Instagram and Google to furnish reviews and additional information.

Originally launched as a web platform in 2021, The Scene has gathered approximately 12,800 users. The developers aim to attract a larger user base in New York City with its mobile application.

Founded by Ridhima Kalani, who previously worked as a personal concierge aiding clients in India, Singapore, Dubai, and London, she perceived a notable void in NYC’s social planning sector upon her arrival. She shared her insights with TechCrunch.

Kalani notes, “People are eager to explore less mainstream venues, so The Scene aims to even out the playing field for all NYC restaurants, fostering more stable, long-term interest in these lesser-known locales…The goal is to eliminate any uncertainty by matching users with settings that align precisely with their stipulated preferences, removing any potential guesswork.”

The app currently showcases 550 venues across Manhattan and Brooklyn, including both popular and “hidden gem” locations like Hearsay, Little Sister, Le Bain, Somewhere Nowhere, and Jack’s Wife Freda, as well as Arte Cafe, Mémé, Pastai, among others. Approximately 100 dining spots in Queens will be available too.

There are plans for The Scene to expand into 22 more cities within the next five years.

Kalani contends that The Scene stands apart from competitors such as BucketListers and SecretNYC, and even from traditional dining reservation platforms like OpenTable and Resy because of its in-depth customization. Beyond mere dining reservations, it also offers tailored recommendations for nightclubs and other evening activities.

“No competing platform will inquire about your specific preferences for an outing with the same level of detail. We have a superior algorithm focused more on democratizing access to dining experiences throughout New York City rather than perpetuating the popularity of already well-known locations,” Kalani elaborated, noting that she has meticulously developed a machine learning model based on her vast experience to ensure it meets her high expectations.

While the app is in its initial stages, it is set to gradually introduce AI-driven features. This include a recommendation search engine adept at parsing natural language queries and an AI concierge chatbot designed to offer users tailored conversational support.

As of now, The Scene is self-funded but is looking ahead to potential fundraising opportunities in the future.
