The fresh wave of users flocking to the social networking innovator Bluesky from the U.K. comes in the wake of Elon Musk’s contentious remarks on the recent U.K. disturbances. While the departure from X, to X’s chief competitor Instagram Threads, hasn’t been reflected in app downloads or usage figures, Bluesky is witnessing a significant uptick in user registrations, boasting a 60% surge in engagement from users in the U.K., it disclosed earlier this week. Further affirming these statistics, the firm on Wednesday showcased a graph illustrating a steep rise in activity from the U.K., outpacing all other nations on the Bluesky platform currently.

This decentralized social networking platform noticed, especially on Tuesday, that the U.K. accounted for more Bluesky registrations than any other nation over five of the past seven days.
Even with a surge of U.K. adopters turning to the decentralized app as an alternative to X, newer findings suggest that Meta’s Threads is still in a stronger position to go head-to-head with X, the platform owned by Musk formerly known as Twitter.

Digital market intelligence firm Similarweb’s recent study highlights that the impact of U.K. users migrating to Bluesky remains modest.
On August 11, Bluesky recorded 67,800 daily active users from the U.K., marking a noteworthy peak, yet not surpassing the platform’s highest-ever U.K. user activity. Earlier in the year, in January, Bluesky experienced over 100,000 daily active U.K. users, rendering the current surge less significant comparatively, according to the firm.
Moreover, the count of Bluesky’s monthly active users from the U.K. stayed the same from June to July, while Threads saw an 8.6% increase in the same period within the U.K. Despite earlier fluctuations in daily and weekly usage metrics for X, they remained within normal parameters, even amidst reports of user migration from the platform.
The shift in U.K. user dynamics interestingly had a minimal impact on X. Despite August 11 being among the weakest days for X in the year, as per Similarweb, Musk’s platform still boasted 6 million daily U.K. active users, considerably outperforming Threads and Bluesky according to available data.

Overall, while X’s user base experiences fluctuations, its monthly active users in the U.K. and U.S. saw an increase of 2.6% and 3.4%, respectively, from June to July. However, this period may not provide the clearest insight, considering that the stabbing incident sparking the U.K. riots occurred in late July, but Musk’s remarks and its ensuing tension with U.K. officials came in August.
Nevertheless, Similarweb’s assessment of Android data worldwide up until August 12 confirms X’s commanding lead over Threads and Bluesky with 91.0 million, 34.9 million, and 594,700 daily active users globally, respectively. On the web, X.com’s daily visits on August 12 alone soared to 192.5 million, dwarfing Threads and Bluesky’s 3.7 million and 616,200 respectively.
Interestingly, the disparity between X’s dominance is slimmer in the U.K. than in the U.S. In terms of monthly active users, X is 5.9 times larger than Threads in the U.S., but in the U.K., the ratio drops to just over three times. This smaller gap could potentially offer an opportunity for either Bluesky or Threads to capture the U.K. market if the trend of users switching continues to rise.
