The landscape of Silicon Valley is evolving with a surge of new startups emerging from the alumni of OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, which recently soared to a $300 billion valuation. This meteoric success has motivated numerous employees to leave and establish their own ventures, leading to the rise of what some are dubbing the “OpenAI mafia.”
Notable startups include Ilya Sutskever’s Safe Superintelligence, which aims to develop a secure form of superintelligence, and Mira Murati’s Thinking Machines Lab, dedicated to creating highly adaptable AI technologies, all having successfully secured billions in funding prior to product launches.
Among the most significant players formed by OpenAI alumni is Anthropic, founded by Dario and Daniela Amodei in 2021. The San Francisco-based company has garnered attention for its emphasis on AI safety and has rapidly grown to become OpenAI’s main competitor, boasting a valuation of $61.5 billion as of March 2025.
Ilya Sutskever’s Safe Superintelligence, which he co-founded after leaving OpenAI in May 2024, is focused on developing a secure superintelligence. Despite lacking a tangible product, the startup has raised an impressive $2 billion, signifying strong investor interest.
Thinking Machines Lab, the brainchild of former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati, focuses on creating customizable AI systems. Merely in its early stages, it plans to raise up to $2 billion at an estimated valuation of $10 billion.
Aravind Srinivas, who left OpenAI in 2022, co-founded Perplexity, an AI search engine that has attracted investments from high-profile figures like Jeff Bezos and Nvidia, while securing a valuation of $18 billion by March 2025.
Kyle Kosic, formerly of OpenAI and associated with Elon Musk’s xAI, which recently acquired X (formerly Twitter), also contributes to the burgeoning ecosystem of AI startups. Meanwhile, ex-OpenAI interim CEO Emmett Shear is launching Stem AI, supported by prominent investors.
Education technology is also benefiting from OpenAI’s exit strategies; Andrej Karpathy, a founding researcher, has founded Eureka Labs, aimed at developing AI teaching assistants. Other ventures include Living Carbon, which focuses on engineering plants to capture carbon emissions, and Prosper Robotics, which seeks to introduce robotic assistants into households.
With numerous startups in development ranging from AI-enhanced search capabilities to eco-friendly technologies and robotics, the legacy of OpenAI continues to inspire a potent wave of innovation across various sectors. This trend not only exemplifies the impact of OpenAI on the tech landscape but also underscores a broader movement towards harnessing artificial intelligence for both commercial success and societal benefit.
