I remember when Guitar Hero sparked controversy among musicians. However, they often overlooked the true essence of the game. No one genuinely believed that a video game controller could replace an instrument that has thrived since the 15th century. Guitar Hero was simply entertaining, and if it inspired a new generation to embrace real instruments, it ultimately benefited the music world.
A similar sentiment hit me when I came across the LiberLive C1 at CES 2025. If the guitar’s future is uncertain, it has little to do with the so-called “first-ever stringless smart guitar.” In fact, calling it a guitar seems somewhat misleading.
Mastering musical instruments can be challenging, time-consuming, and often frustrating. As someone who’s struggled with the guitar for decades, I can attest to this. Like Guitar Hero, it’s far-fetched to think that innovations like this pose any kind of existential threat to the traditional guitar (in fact, the rise of non-guitar-focused pop music has already played a significant role in that).
It’s quite rewarding to engage with an instrument that allows for immediate playability. Ironically, my experience as a guitar player might have hindered my interaction with the C1. It required a shift in mindset to appreciate the instrument’s straightforwardness.
The instrument features a series of chord names linked to buttons on its neck. By holding down one of these chords while ‘strumming’ the paddle on the C1’s body, you can produce a chord. That’s the essence of it, with no individual notes or intricate solos involved. You can, however, strum along and sing to songs through the associated app, turning it into a sort of enhanced karaoke experience.
It’s enjoyable, portable, priced at $699, and boasts a six-hour battery life. Nevertheless, it’s unlikely to displace traditional guitars anytime soon.
