The Latest Atari Handheld Understands Its Audience

by admin

While CES isn’t primarily known as a gaming expo, a handful of intriguing products often emerge amidst the buzz. One such item is the Gamestation Go, developed in collaboration with My Arcade. This handheld console features a 7-inch display and comes preloaded with over 200 games from various Atari eras.

However, the existence of a portable game emulator alone doesn’t hold much weight in today’s smartphone era, where they are plentiful. The recognition from Atari certainly adds credibility, but it’s not the sole aspect that makes this device stand out. What truly sets it apart is the meticulous attention to detail in its design.

Although the numeric keypad on the edge of the screen may provoke vague memories of the N-Gage, it serves as a reminder of how well the handheld incorporates various classic Atari elements. This keypad was, after all, crucial for several Atari 2600 games.

Above the keypad, there are four letter buttons, complemented by a dial, D-pad, and trackball located to the left of the screen. The top of the display is equipped with L and R buttons, useful for controlling features like the flippers in the Atari-inspired Balls of Steel pinball game.

The target market for an exclusive Atari portable device is quite specific. With emulators making a vast library of classic games universally accessible, the appeal lies in the ability to navigate through a plethora of titles using configurations reminiscent of their original controllers. This is bound to resonate with enthusiasts of vintage gaming.

This handheld comes equipped with a lighting system that illuminates the accompanying control set for the next game in rotation. Additionally, it features an HDMI output on the top, allowing it to interface with a television, similar to a Nintendo Switch.

The Atari Gamestation Go is expected to launch in the third quarter of 2025, with a retail price of $149.
