Last week, I had the opportunity to converse with Stefan Powell, the co-founder and CEO of Dawn Aerospace, to discuss their latest testing phase for the Mk-II Aurora aircraft. For those not in the know, the Mk-II is essentially an aircraft powered by rocket technology, or as the company describes, “it’s more an aircraft that performs like a rocket than a rocket donning wings.” Powell shared intriguing insights about these unconventional vehicles:

“The general assumption is that spaceplanes, like the Shuttle, were a flawed concept, and thus foolish, and anything with wings, as demonstrated by Virgin Orbit’s failure, is nonsensical. Launching from air is dismissed as illogical. It takes a very detailed discussion to truly grasp the distinction between our approach and the ‘rocket with wings’ concepts preluding us. We’re navigating an aircraft trajectory, though we aim to emulate rocket-like performance.”

I found this comprehensive piece by The Wall Street Journal truly engaging, which documents the perspective of Florida’s locals on SpaceX’s ambitious Starship launch plans in their region. As I covered earlier, SpaceX’s proposal for 44 Starship launches annually from the Kennedy Space Center provoked some discontent. Moreover, the company is contemplating upping the ante with 76 launches from Cape Canaveral, cumulating to 120 launches per year, stirring concern among the local populace and business community.

On the historical front, Earth observation embarked on a new era on August 14, 1959. That day, the Explorer 6 satellite captured and transmitted the inaugural image of our planet from space. The image, showcasing part of the Pacific Ocean near Mexico, might not be the clearest, but it was transmitted to Earth over a span of 40 minutes, marking a significant milestone in space exploration.
