Tata Takes Control with 60% Ownership of Pegatron’s Indian Division, an Apple Collaborator

by admin

Tata Electronics has secured a 60% controlling interest in the Indian subsidiary of Pegatron, an assembly partner for Apple, as it seeks to enhance its iPhone manufacturing capabilities in the region.

Based in Taiwan, Pegatron operates three iPhone production facilities in India, including one located near Chennai in Tamil Nadu. This acquisition comes less than a year after Tata Electronics took over the Indian operations of smartphone assembler Wistron. Some key personnel from Pegatron, particularly those with technological and operational expertise, are expected to remain at the production sites, according to an insider familiar with the transaction.

While Pegatron and Tata did not reveal the financial details of the transaction, Tata noted that the acquisition aligns with its strategy to expand its manufacturing operations within India.

“We are excited about ushering in a new era of AI, digital solutions, and technology-driven manufacturing as we establish these new facilities and broaden our operations in India,” stated Randhir Thakur, CEO and managing director of Tata Electronics.

Having commenced iPhone assembly in India only last year, Tata is rapidly becoming one of Apple’s key partners in Asia as the tech giant looks to diversify its manufacturing footprint beyond China.
