Surf: The Open Social Web Browser Simplifying Custom Feed Creation for Everyone

by admin

Surf, the latest app from Flipboard, offers users a streamlined way to explore the open social web by allowing them to create tailored feeds centred around their personal interests. Unlike traditional social networks that rely on algorithm-driven timelines, Surf enables individuals to curate content related to hobbies, sports, communities, and any topics they wish to follow.

With the recent rollout of Starter Sets, Flipboard has simplified the process of feed creation, making it accessible even to those unfamiliar with social media customization. The Starter Sets provide pre-built options, making it easier for users to dive into feed-building without needing extensive technical know-how.

By promoting self-curation, Surf empowers users to reclaim their social media experience from major tech companies like Meta and Google. While platforms such as Graze and SkyFeed have offered custom feed-building solutions, they typically cater to a more tech-savvy audience. In contrast, Starter Sets are designed for everyday users eager to start their own feeds.

Having launched in late 2023 as an invite-only beta, Surf marks the second phase of Flipboard’s initiative to curate content from across the web. Previously, Flipboard’s flagship app allowed users to gather and organise information from various blogs and news sites into custom magazines. However, as access to content from social platforms became restricted, Surf sought to harness the open social web, accommodating platforms built on open protocols including Bluesky, Mastodon, and Pixelfed, in addition to traditional sources like blogs and podcasts.

The newly introduced Starter Sets come pre-populated with recommended sources sorted by popular categories, facilitating an easier entry point for users wanting to create feeds. For example, selecting a “Hobbies” category allows users to explore subtopics like cycling, gaming, or cooking, where they can assemble content from various sources.

Moreover, Surf enables users to add their personal social media accounts from platforms like Mastodon or Bluesky, filtering content according to designated topics. A handy search feature allows users to discover specific sources and apply filters to ensure content remains relevant to their interests.

Another practical feature enables users to publish their custom feeds directly to Bluesky. By using the menu options on their feed, users can integrate their curated content into their Bluesky profiles, although this will primarily display Bluesky-sourced content when accessed on the Bluesky app itself.

While Surf is still limited to an invite-only model, the app is progressively inviting users from its waitlist, signalling an intention to expand its accessibility in the near future.
