Google has unveiled that it is rolling out Android 15 and sharing its source code before the consumer version hits the market. This update will be available on supported Pixel devices shortly and is slated for release on specific models from major brands like Samsung, Honor, iQOO, Lenovo, Motorola, Nothing, OnePlus, Oppo, realme, Sharp, Sony, Tecno, vivo, and Xiaomi over the next few months.
This iteration of Android introduces features such as Private Space, enabling users to dedicate a part of the operating system to safeguard sensitive data. The update enhances user experience by allowing the saving of favored split-screen app combinations for immediate use and the option to keep the taskbar constantly visible. Additional updates include the ability to record part of the screen and the introduction of more user-friendly passkeys.
In its Tuesday reveal, Google mentioned that Android 15 is being made accessible through the Android Open Source Project. This initiative offers the necessary tools and source code to develop customized Android OS versions, adapt various devices and accessories to the Android ecosystem, and meet compatibility standards.
Google highlights that Android 15 provides developers with enhanced opportunities to refine their applications, ensuring an optimal performance across any version of the platform. Furthermore, advancements have been made in typography, global accessibility, media, and camera functionality, along with user interface improvements, and bolstering privacy and security features. Among these security enhancements, Android 15 facilitates secure sign-ins with a single tap via passkeys and strengthens defenses against malicious entities.
Engaging with developers further, Google plans to introduce a tutorial series named Spotlight Weeks. This series will explore technical aspects of developing for Android, beginning with a week dedicated to Android 15 insights.
“Through Android 15, we persist in our endeavor to develop a platform that prioritizes privacy and security, enhances your productivity, and expands your potential to create stunning applications, exceptional media, and camera functionalities, alongside an intuitive user interface, especially on tablets and foldables,” shared Matthew McCullough, VP of Product for Android Developer, in a blog post.
Android 15 offers developers upgraded features in typography and international support, improvements in camera and media capabilities. To accommodate developers, Google is making the transition to most new app-targeted changes optional, allowing developers additional time to update their apps in preparation for targeting SDK version 35.
