Superhuman Unveils AI-Driven Categorization Feature to Minimize Spam in Your Inbox

by admin

Over two years have passed since ChatGPT made its debut. In its aftermath, nearly every email application began integrating AI-driven features for composing messages and summarizing content. Some even launched AI-based search functionalities to help users navigate their inboxes efficiently. Superhuman is now leveraging AI to address a significant email challenge: the organization of messages.

Google was one of the pioneers in categorizing emails with its Inbox email client, which was discontinued in 2019. Since then, various email clients, like Gmail’s default application, have attempted to replicate this feature, with varying degrees of success.

Superhuman is now introducing a new Auto Label feature that automatically assigns categories such as marketing, pitch, social, and news to relevant emails. Users can also create custom labels using prompts. This email client emphasizes rapid email management, allowing users to auto-archive specific labels if they wish to remove that category from view.

“One of the main pieces of feedback we received from our users over the past year was the growing influx of cold emails that are promotional or spammy. They wanted to know why Superhuman wasn’t filtering these messages. At the time, we depended on Gmail and Outlook’s spam filters, which were insufficient. Thus, we decided to independently improve our classification system with this new labeling feature,” Superhuman CEO Rahul Vohra shared in a call with TechCrunch.

One limitation of the auto labels upon their release is the inability to modify prompts for creating labels. Consequently, if you find that the existing prompt isn’t effectively filtering emails as expected, you must generate a new prompt.

The application allows users to set up a Split Inbox based on customized filters, such as specific subjects or email addresses of certain domains. Additionally, users can create a new Split Inbox in combination with existing filters.

Superhuman is also enhancing its reminder system. Previously, users could snooze emails for later visibility, but now, if you respond to emails requiring a reply and don’t receive one, the app will automatically bring the email back to your attention after a set period—this timeframe can be adjusted in the settings. Alongside this, there is a new AI-powered auto-draft feature that crafts follow-up messages in your style while considering the context of the ongoing conversation.

Vohra mentioned to TechCrunch that the company’s next focus is incorporating various knowledge bases, such as your website and Wikipedia profile, into the app. Currently, it already has access to your calendar for scheduling information.

With this context in mind, Superhuman’s AI may eventually be capable of auto-drafting responses to emails requiring your attention, and possibly even sending some replies automatically if you permit it. For example, it could respond to meeting requests by suggesting a potential time.

In addition, Superhuman plans to create IFTTT-like workflows paired with prompts. For example, if you receive a recruiting-related email, you could establish a template response through AI prompts and forward the email to the recruitment team if it satisfies specific conditions.

While the aspect of an email client autonomously responding to messages is still a distant goal, addressing the categorization challenge is a pressing issue that could be resolved now. The newly introduced labeling feature appears to be a promising advancement, provided it effectively organizes emails into their respective categories.
