Subaru has unveiled its latest electric vehicle, the 2026 Trailseeker SUV, at the New York International Auto Show. This new model follows the Solterra and continues Subaru’s partnership with Toyota, showcasing a familiar design reminiscent of the Subaru Ascent but on a smaller scale—similar to the Outback.
The Trailseeker stands larger than the Solterra, an all-electric subcompact crossover introduced in the U.S. in 2022. Positioned as an adventurous option for outdoor enthusiasts, it aims to compete with upcoming models like the Rivian R2, set for production in 2026. However, Rivian may have an advantage as the Trailseeker will be manufactured in Japan, potentially facing higher tariffs in the current market.
While details about the Trailseeker’s propulsion system and underlying platform remain scarce, Subaru promises notable performance features, including all-wheel drive powered by dual electric motors that deliver 375 horsepower and a towing capacity of 3,500 pounds. The vehicle boasts a 74.7 kWh lithium-ion battery, providing an estimated range of over 260 miles, and is compatible with the Tesla Supercharging Network through its North American Charging Standard port.
The design has been tailored specifically for the adventurous lifestyle, with enhancements like a larger cargo area and a taller roof, making it about six inches longer and nearly an inch taller than the Solterra. Despite its capabilities, it offers a ground clearance of 8.3 inches, which is slightly lower than the Subaru Forester and Outback.
Subaru has also given the Trailseeker a refreshed exterior, with redesigned headlamps and a robust front bumper, alongside a stylish interior featuring metallic accents, a central console for devices, and a 14-inch touchscreen—the largest ever for a Subaru model—exclusive of the 2026 Solterra.
The infotainment system supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and various charging options for devices include two wireless 15W chargers and multiple fast USB-C ports for rear-seat passengers. Moreover, the Trailseeker comes equipped with an advanced driver assistance system, offering features like blind spot monitoring, lane departure alerts, adaptive cruise control, and pre-collision braking.
As details continue to emerge, more information regarding the pricing and specifications of the Trailseeker will be provided before it hits retailers across the U.S. in 2026. This new addition to Subaru’s electric lineup underscores their commitment to blending advanced technology with rugged outdoor capability.
