Study Reveals Many ‘iPad Kids’ Actively Use Platform X

by admin

A notable trend among Gen Alpha’s children, aged 7 to 9, known colloquially as “iPad kids,” is their burgeoning presence on X (the platform formerly known as Twitter). Recent insights from Qustodio, a creator of parental control software, reveal in a Monday report on U.S. children’s app usage that more than 30% of this cohort are X users, with 44% owning tablets for app and game access.

X doesn’t typically offer content that caters to the younger audience, with its focus on politics, breaking news, and a surge in misinformation and Elon Musk’s personal and political stances, including support for Trump. Despite this, Qustodio suggests that the platform’s visibility in Google Search results, where X posts often feature prominently, might be luring in the curious younger demographic.

The curiosity of youngsters towards X was highlighted by Qustodio in a dialogue with TechCrunch, suggesting a primary driver behind this trend.

The accessibility of X via Google searches on topics of interest is believed to be a gateway for children, while many parents, perceiving X as an app for older users, might not prioritize restricting it in the same way they would with platforms like TikTok or Snapchat. This oversight could potentially expose children to a range of unsuitable content, including hate speech, pornography, and disinformation, with reports indicating that 13% of X’s content is adult in nature.

Interestingly, Qustodio’s findings stem from actual usage data—captured via its parental control software—from around 180,000 families, offering a real-world glimpse into app and game preferences among children.

The report also disclosed that children as young as 7 to 9 years are engaging with social media platforms like X and Reddit, often without parental blocks due to underestimation of these platforms’ exposure risks to explicit and harmful content.

By the age of 10, 42% of U.S. children possess their own smartphones. The report further notes that TikTok usage commences around this age, with children spending an average of 121 minutes daily on the app, equating to an estimated 240 videos considering the average 30-second video length.

For 10- to 12-year-olds, Roblox and YouTube are favorites, but social platforms like X and Reddit also see significant usage increases, indicating a broadened exposure to diverse apps as children age.

Among the 13- to 15-year-old group, traditional gaming platforms like Roblox see a dip in popularity while Spotify, YouTube, and Amazon Shopping rise to the top. This age group also sees a notable uptick in X and Reddit usage, with 44% engaging with these platforms.

For older teens, ages 16 to 18, Spotify, YouTube, and Amazon remain the top apps, with a substantial portion also dedicating time to Instagram and Snapchat, highlighting a continuity in app preferences with slight variations based on age.

The prevalence of platforms like X, Reddit, and Facebook amongst older children might be even more pronounced outside controlled environments, suggesting a potential underestimation in blocking efforts by parents, as posited by Qustodio.

Attempts to gather comments from X were unmet, as Musk’s administration currently doesn’t maintain a traditional communications team.
