Spotify has announced the expansion of its AI-driven feature, Prompted Playlist, which now includes the ability to create podcast playlists. Initially tested in New Zealand with a focus on music, the feature has since been rolled out to additional countries, including the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Ireland, Australia, and Sweden.
This update allows Spotify premium users in these regions to generate AI-assisted playlists specifically for podcasts in English. To create a playlist, users can select the “Create” option and then choose “Prompted Playlists,” entering a prompt that reflects their interests, such as, “Make a playlist of True Crime podcasts I might enjoy, especially those with intriguing twists.”
The feature also allows users to specify how frequently they want their playlists updated, with choices for daily or weekly updates, or the option not to update at all. When a new episode is added to a user’s playlist, a brief note explaining its inclusion will be provided.
Lizzy Hale, Spotify’s Global Head of Podcast Editorial, stated, “Podcast fans are always looking for their next great listen. Prompted Playlist makes discovery feel effortless and personal. For creators, it unlocks powerful new opportunities for discovery, bringing both back catalog and new episodes to audiences who are actively signalling what they want to hear.”
Spotify highlighted that over 34 million new podcasts are discovered each week on its platform, and aims to enhance podcast discovery through this new AI feature. Users may also encounter suggested Prompted Playlists created by Spotify’s culture team on their home screens, which they can further personalise by adjusting the prompts.
In addition to enhancing the podcast experience, Spotify has been making adjustments to its platform to cater to podcast creators. Earlier this year, the company reduced the criteria for video podcast monetisation, now requiring creators to have just three published podcasts, 2,000 hours of consumption in the last 30 days, and at least 1,000 engaged listeners. In February, co-CEO Alex Norström noted that the platform hosts over 530,000 video podcasts.
With these developments, Spotify is ramping up its efforts to create a more engaging and personalised podcast experience for its users while providing creators with greater visibility and monetisation opportunities.
