In May, Spotify began restricting access to song lyrics for non-paying users, allowing them to see lyrics for only three songs monthly. This was part of an effort to encourage more subscriptions to its premium service.
Following a wave of feedback from users, the music streaming service has decided to increase this limit. From today, Spotify is expanding the number of lyrics accessible to free users. This update will be rolled out globally for all users to experience.
A representative from Spotify spoke to TechCrunch, stating, “Spotify continually explores and adjusts. This means the features we offer may differ by subscription level, region, and device. In the following weeks, we’re extending the range of lyrics available to Spotify Free users worldwide, enhancing their listening experience.”
While Spotify has not revealed the new lyrics limit for free users, indications suggest it will be a substantial increase from the initial three-song cap. The enhancement has been met with enthusiasm from several users on X/Twitter.
Spotify originally tested implementing a paywall for lyrics access in September 2023. It remains unclear if this strategy helped boost their premium subscriber numbers. However, with the recent removal of these restrictions, any potential effect seems to have been minimal.
By the second quarter of 2024, the company announced it had reached 626 million monthly active users, with 246 million enjoying premium services.
