Spotify announced on Tuesday that it has added 5 million premium subscribers in the first quarter of 2025, which translates to a 12% increase compared to the previous year. This growth brings its total premium subscriber count to 268 million, marking the second-highest number it has ever achieved and the best first-quarter net addition of paid subscribers since 2020.
In terms of financial performance, Spotify reported an impressive operating income of €509 million (approximately $528 million) for the quarter. However, this figure fell short of the company’s own guidance, which anticipated an operating income of €548 million ($625 million). Still, total revenue rose by 15% year-on-year to reach €4.2 billion ($4.8 billion).
Spotify’s total monthly active users have reached 678 million, including 423 million using the ad-supported service. These figures follow a successful previous quarter where the company achieved an operating income of €477 million ($509.48 million), illustrating its route to profitability in the streaming market.
Continuing to assert its dominance in the music streaming space, Spotify outperforms competitors like Apple Music and Amazon Music. The company is also making significant strides in the video podcast arena, competing with platforms such as YouTube. It currently offers 330,000 shows and has launched the Spotify Partner Program, which has distributed over $100 million to podcast creators within the first quarter alone.
Recently, Spotify has expanded its AI Playlist feature to over 40 markets, enhancing its user experience and solidifying its position as an innovative player in the industry.
