On Thursday, Spotify revealed its acceptance of audiobooks created using ElevenLabs’ AI voice technology for narration. As one of the leading providers in AI audio, this collaboration is anticipated to significantly enhance the availability of AI-narrated audiobooks on the platform.
Authors looking to upload AI-narrated audiobooks must first download their audio files from ElevenLabs before proceeding to Findaway Voices, Spotify’s distribution service for audiobooks. Each recording will undergo a review process prior to its publication. Spotify distinguishes AI-narrated titles by labeling them accordingly.
With ElevenLabs, authors can create narrations in 29 distinct languages. Although the free version permits only 10 minutes of text-to-speech each month, the $99 per month Pro plan allows for up to 500 minutes of narration.
This latest collaboration comes two years after Spotify’s partnership with Google Play Books, which also introduced AI-narrated audiobooks. Spotify aims to collaborate with additional partners to broaden its selection of audiobooks.
Nonetheless, the surge of AI-generated audiobooks is likely to provoke significant discussion within the publishing sector. Some industry experts caution that these AI-produced recordings might degrade the listening experience for audiences.
