Set to embark as soon as this winter, a novel commercial space venture aims to monitor the polar areas from low Earth orbit, marking the inaugural manned mission of its kind. Dubbed Fram2, this mission pays homage to the historic icebreaker used by Norwegian legend Fridtjof Nansen in his late 19th-century Arctic explorations.
Chun Wang, a pioneer and thrill-seeker in the cryptocurrency field, takes the helm and likely provides the funding for this endeavor. Presently employing his considerable resources and leisure for global and, possibly, extraterrestrial exploration, Wang’s ambition propels this project. (Efforts to gather further insights from him are underway.)
The expedition’s team boasts first-time orbit travelers including Jannicke Mikkelsen from Norway, Eric Philips from Australia, and Germany’s Rabea Rogge (featured image).
Scheduled for a polar launch from Florida in late 2024 — with the usual caveats about potential delays — Fram2 plans to orbit at an altitude of 425-450 kilometers for a duration of three to five days.
Their journey isn’t solely for the breathtaking vistas; the crew aims to conduct significant scientific research ranging from pioneering spaceborne X-ray experiments to the study of “unusual light emissions akin to auroras.”
Fram2 proposes several groundbreaking achievements, with its focus on the Arctic—a region as challenging to access on the ground as any, yet equally navigable from orbit. Wang’s fascination with Nansen and early adventurers is evident in the mission’s nomenclature and objectives. (For those intrigued, Oslo houses an impressive museum showcasing the original vessel.)
Up until now, SpaceX has successfully completed 13 crewed missions. Fram2 aspires to be its sixth commercial astronaut endeavor upon launch.
