SoundCloud Updates Policies to Permit AI Training on User-Generated Content

by admin

SoundCloud has recently updated its terms of use to permit the utilisation of user-uploaded audio for training artificial intelligence (AI) models. As noted by tech ethicist Ed Newton-Rex, the updated terms highlight that users implicitly consent to the platform using their content for the purposes of “informing, training, or developing” AI technologies. This modification, first noted on February 12, aligns with a growing trend among major tech platforms embracing AI advancements.

The new terms do acknowledge existing agreements with third-party rights holders such as record labels, which suggests that SoundCloud retains some obligations concerning copyrighted material. The platform has secured commercial agreements with various music publishers, including prominent entities like Universal Music and Warner Music Group.

However, a thorough review by TechCrunch found no clear option for users to opt out of this new policy within the platform’s settings, and SoundCloud had not provided an immediate response to inquiries regarding this change.

SoundCloud’s pivot towards AI is reflective of broader industry movements, as noted in recent months where several popular platforms have adapted their policies to facilitate AI training. For example, X (formerly Twitter) and LinkedIn updated their privacy policies to grant rights for third parties to use user-generated content for AI training. YouTube has also adopted a similar approach, allowing external entities to employ user clips for AI purposes.

Critics have raised concerns regarding these shifts, arguing that users should have an opt-in choice prior to having their data used for AI development, as well as advocating for compensation and recognition for their contributions to AI training datasets.

Last year, SoundCloud collaborated with numerous vendors to introduce AI-driven tools aimed at enhancing user experience, such as remixing, vocal generation, and custom sample creation. The platform asserted a commitment to ensuring that rights holders receive appropriate credit and payment while upholding ethical AI practices that respect creators’ rights.

As AI continues to evolve within the content and music space, the implications of policies like that of SoundCloud’s will be closely observed by both users and creators alike, raising important discussions about rights, transparency, and fair treatment in the digital ecosystem.
