Softr Expands Beyond Airtable: A No-Code App Builder Innovating Beyond Databases

by admin

For small businesses looking to create a client portal or internal tool, securing a budget and the right resources for a dedicated developer can often be a challenge. This is where over 600,000 professionals, including project managers, HR personnel, and marketers, have turned to Softr’s no-code app builder to take matters into their own hands and develop essential tools independently.

Initially launched as an interface for the popular enterprise database Airtable, Softr is set to unveil significant product updates in 2025.

Now, customers have the flexibility to utilize any third-party database for their data needs, ranging from intuitive solutions like Google Sheets and Notion to more developer-oriented databases such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, and MariaDB.

“As we expanded, we discovered countless companies that manage data manually through paperwork, emails, and spreadsheets. This was one significant challenge,” explained co-founder and CEO Mariam Hakobyan in an interview with TechCrunch.

“Additionally, the data was often dispersed across various platforms; portions were housed in HubSpot, some in Google Sheets, and others in SQL databases. Our mission became to provide a unified source where users could create applications that leverage their diverse data repositories for operational tasks,” she added.

This flexible, data-agnostic approach coincides with a revamped app-building experience. Softr now offers a selection of predefined blocks that users can easily drag and drop to construct pages with lists, charts, forms, tables, and more. New AI functionalities have also been incorporated to assist in app development.

In light of its emphasis on internal tools and client portals, Softr has implemented a permission system. For example, you can set up two distinct user groups, allowing clients to submit forms and view select data, while employees enjoy full access to all client information.

“In the realm of no-code solutions, Softr is recognized for its user-friendliness. It consistently ranks among the top five tools for embarking on your no-code journey due to its simplicity and ease of use. This straightforwardness is deliberate; we want to empower individuals without developer expertise to create their own tools,” Hakobyan noted.

Looking ahead, Softr plans to roll out workflows and tables in the coming months, making it possible to use the platform without relying on an external data repository. While some users may already have data stored in platforms like Google Sheets or Notion, these forthcoming features are expected to attract new sign-ups.

“If you have existing data, that’s fantastic, as you can integrate it with your app. However, if you’re looking to develop an application that doesn’t rely on a database, we have you covered as well,” Hakobyan confirmed.

Softr has embraced a freemium model and primarily relies on word-of-mouth referrals for generating sales. Out of the 600,000 individuals who signed up on the platform, around 5,000 are currently paying customers.

To note, Softr successfully raised $13.5 million in a Series A funding round in 2022, led by FirstMark Capital. The company has since operated efficiently, maintaining a lean structure without a sales team. “We are on the verge of being profitable,” Hakobyan stated.

Based in Berlin, Softr’s founding team is supported by a 45-member workforce distributed across 15 different countries.
