Snap has announced, as part of its Q1 2025 earnings report, the discontinuation of its plans for a simplified version of its Snapchat app. This decision follows seven months of testing a redesigned app that eliminated key features like Snap Map and Stories tabs, instead focusing on a navigation bar with just three icons: chat, camera, and Spotlight, which is intended to compete with TikTok.
Snap is now pivoting towards a “refined five-tab interface” that retains all existing functionalities while enhancing access to Spotlight. CEO Evan Spiegel explained during an investor call that feedback indicated that the simpler design proved challenging for dedicated users who frequently utilise features like the map and stories. The company aims to incorporate learnings from the three-tab design into its upcoming five-tab layout, which promises a balance between familiarity and functional accessibility. Insights from user engagement indicated that frequent users preferred the five-tab format, appreciating the ease of discovering content via a tile-based interface.
The decision to revert to a more comprehensive design comes after Snap experienced a decline of one million users in North America, reducing Daily Active Users (DAUs) to 99 million. On a positive note, the report highlighted a significant 55% year-over-year increase in daily users for Snap’s AI feature, “My AI,” indicating growing interest in AI-driven interactions. Spiegel hinted at forthcoming AI-related announcements, emphasizing the potential of AI in enhancing visual communication on the platform, particularly as it integrates with augmented reality for a novel user experience.
In terms of financial performance, Snap reported a Q1 revenue of $1.36 billion, reflecting a 14% increase compared to the previous year, largely attributable to the growth of the Snapchat+ subscription service and improvements in advertising solutions. Furthermore, the company reached a milestone of over 900 million Monthly Active Users (MAUs) worldwide, with total Daily Active Users (DUAs) climbing to 460 million, marking an increase of 38 million from the previous year.
As Snap continues to evolve, the feedback from its user base will undoubtedly shape the future direction of the app, especially as it seeks to enhance user engagement and leverage artificial intelligence in its offerings.
