In Silicon Valley, an unusual incident unfolded over the weekend when audio-enabled crosswalk buttons in cities such as Menlo Park, Palo Alto, and Redwood City were hacked to emit audio clips mimicking the voices of tech giants Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk. Locals recorded videos showcasing the bizarre alterations, where the buttons delivered AI-generated messages resembling the two billionaires.
One modified button, impersonating Zuckerberg, assured pedestrians, “It’s normal to feel uncomfortable or even violated as we forcefully insert AI into every facet of your conscious experience… there’s absolutely nothing you can do to stop it.” Another, mimicking Musk, quipped about wealth not being able to buy happiness but amusingly remarked, “God knows I’ve tried. But it can buy a Cybertruck and that’s pretty sick, right?” The Musk voice also expressed a feeling of loneliness, stating, “F—k, I’m so alone.”
While the motive behind the hack remains unclear, initial indications suggest it may have been an act of hacktivism. The city officials are currently investigating the situation, with Redwood City confirming they are working swiftly to resolve the issue. It appears the tampering occurred on a Friday.
These audio-enabled buttons are designed to assist individuals with visual impairments or other accessibility needs by conveying audio cues that indicate when it is safe to cross streets. Reports indicate that these devices are susceptible to manipulation, particularly through the exploitation of easily accessible default passwords. This vulnerability was highlighted in a 2024 video featuring security researcher Deviant Ollam, who elaborated on the potential for such devices to be compromised.
Polara, the manufacturer of these audio-enabled crosswalk buttons, has yet to respond to inquiries from TechCrunch regarding the incident. This unexpected event raises questions about the security of urban infrastructure increasingly reliant on AI and connected technology, marking a peculiar intersection of tech celebrity culture and public safety measures.
