SF officials tackle a disturbing new AI menace: Websites that digitally ‘strip’ images

by admin

The moral implications of AI-generated explicit content continue to provoke intense discussions. Yet, there’s widespread agreement that employing technology to craft sexual imagery of individuals without their consent is undeniably egregious. A particularly disturbing application of this technology is found in “undressing” websites. These websites manipulate an ordinary, fully clothed photo to produce a synthetic nude image, opening the door to boundless exploitation.

In a proactive move, San Francisco City Attorney David Chiu has initiated legal action to shut down 16 leading websites engaging in this practice, as he disclosed during a press briefing and an exchange with The New York Times. This effort may not eradicate the technology’s misuse entirely, but it aims to significantly increase the legal peril for those producing such content.
