Sarah Tavel, who made history as Benchmark’s first female general partner eight years ago, announced her new role on social media platform X. She is transitioning to a venture partner position, allowing her to maintain her investment activities and board memberships while dedicating more time to explore cutting-edge AI tools and contemplating the future of artificial intelligence.
Tavel brings a wealth of experience to her new role, having joined Benchmark in 2017 following a substantial tenure as a partner at Greylock and a product manager at Pinterest. Earlier in her career, she worked as an investor at Bessemer Venture Partners, where she played a pivotal role in identifying opportunities like Pinterest and GitHub.
Benchmark, established in 1995, is renowned for its unique structure, boasting a compact team of six or fewer general partners. This firm differentiates itself from many VC firms by employing an equal partnership model, where all general partners share fees and profits equally, rather than following the convention of senior partners reaping larger rewards.
Throughout her time as a general partner, Tavel contributed to a diverse range of investments, including the campsite marketplace Hipcamp, cryptocurrency intelligence firm Chainalysis, and beauty platform Supergreat, which was recently acquired by Whatnot. She also supported the now-defunct photo-sharing app Paparazzi and invested in the AI sales platform 11X, which has garnered attention in recent TechCrunch articles.
As Tavel embarks on this new chapter at Benchmark, her focus on artificial intelligence and innovative technologies positions her well to make further impactful contributions to the venture capital landscape.
