Crafting the perfect wireless earbuds is an elusive goal, with a myriad of designs that don’t hit the mark. Samsung encountered its fair share of these missteps before perfecting the design of the beloved Galaxy Buds. Notably, Samsung consistently avoided the iconic stem design popularized by Apple’s AirPods across its iterations.
This approach took a noticeable shift during the recent Unpacked 2024 showcase, where Samsung introduced the Galaxy Buds 3 Pro. The latest addition appears to borrow aesthetic cues from Apple, resulting in a product that nods to its competitor, especially in the white variant. The elongated charging case, with a unique transparent lid, echoes the aesthetic of the AirPods Pros’ case.

The silver Galaxy Buds 3 Pro, however, set themselves apart with distinctive design features. Notably, an LED strip dubbed the “Blade” on the earbud stem adds visual flair and integrates functional swipe and click interactions, marking a significant design evolution.
This design shift reflects a broader trend among hardware manufacturers embracing this form factor for practical reasons. One drawback of the conventional Galaxy Buds design was the limited control surface, an issue addressed by the sharp, 90-degree angle of the Blade, contrasting with the smoother curve of the AirPods.
Moreover, the Pro model boasts silicone ear tips, setting it apart from the basic version, similar to how Apple differentiates its earbuds. Personal preferences in earbuds are highly subjective, influenced by various factors, including the unique shape of each user’s ears. Yet, for those valuing comfort and a secure fit, silicone tips are a favored choice.

Samsung’s stance on the evolving design of its earbuds is clear: “The Galaxy Buds 3 and Buds 3 Pro have been meticulously designed with two purpose-built options. The Buds 3 Pro are designed as Canal Type for immersive sound experiences, while the Buds 3 offer an Open Type design suited for extended wear in various environments.”
Featuring adaptive active noise cancellation enabled by onboard mics, alongside siren and voice detection capabilities, both Galaxy Buds 3 models are now available for preorder and will begin shipping on July 24. The base model is priced at $180, with the Pro variant available for $250.
