On Thursday, Roli unveiled its newest educational offering, the aptly named Roli Piano, at the NAAM audio show held in Anaheim. This innovative instrument enhances earlier products like the Roli Airwave and Piano M, significantly increasing the number of keys from the latter’s 24 to an impressive 49.
In many respects, the Piano retains similarities with its forerunner, featuring MIDI keys that illuminate and synchronize with a complementary instructional app accessed via smartphones or tablets. In contrast, the Airwave introduces hand tracking, allowing for gesture-based sound production.
With a price tag of $599, the new keyboard is considerably more expensive than the current price of the Piano M, which stands at $249. However, the London-based music technology startup is promoting an introductory offer for early adopters, bringing the price down to $399 for a limited time.
Additionally, in tune with modern trends, this 2025 launch incorporates references to generative AI. The newly introduced Piano AI Assistant is described by the company as “the first step in leveraging generative AI to make learning music more accessible, intuitive, and enjoyable than ever before.”
Launching alongside the Piano, the Assistant is designed to enhance the learning experience while also integrating elements of music theory.
In the past year, Roli has shifted its focus primarily towards their Piano line. This strategic move towards educational tools is a logical progression for the company, especially after its bankruptcy filing in 2021. While products like the Seaboard and Blocks showcased ingenuity, they tended to engage a niche market within the music industry.
Conversely, music education presents a significant growth opportunity for a smaller hardware manufacturer.
