As AI coding tools generate vast amounts of code monthly, a new challenge arises—ensuring this software operates correctly. Qodo, a US-based startup specialising in AI agents for code review, testing, and governance, believes that code verification will shape the future of software development.
Recently, Qodo secured $70 million in Series B funding led by Qumra Capital, bringing its total investments to $120 million. Other notable investors include Maor Ventures, Phoenix Venture Partners, and several prominent individuals from OpenAI and Meta.
The startup aims to enhance trust in AI-generated code as organisations increasingly adopt tools like OpenClaw and Claude Code, which have revealed that expedited code production does not necessarily ensure reliability or security. Unlike other AI review tools that focus solely on changes made, Qodo assesses how these changes impact systems holistically, taking into account company standards, historical context, and risk tolerance to empower firms in managing AI-generated code effectively.
Founded in 2022 by Itamar Friedman, previously involved with Visualead and Alibaba, Qodo was born from his experiences where he recognised that generating and verifying systems require distinct approaches. His background in automating hardware verification with machine learning at Mellanox and his insights from Alibaba’s Damo Academy highlighted the evolution of AI, particularly in language reasoning.
Despite high confidence in AI capabilities, a recent survey noted that while 95% of developers lack full trust in AI-generated code, only 48% review this code consistently before use, indicating a substantial gap in practice versus awareness. Friedman emphasises that while numerous companies are advancing AI technology, most focus on features rather than comprehensive solutions for code quality and oversight.
Qodo differentiates itself in a competitive landscape by prioritising performance. The startup has recently topped Martian’s Code Review Bench, achieving 64.3%, far exceeding rivals in identifying intricate bugs and cross-file issues without bombarding developers with excessive information. The release of Qodo 2.0, a multi-agent code review system, further enhances its competitive edge, learning to adapt to the unique definitions of code quality across organisations.
Already collaborating with industry leaders such as Nvidia, Walmart, and Red Hat, Qodo’s mission is to transition from “stateless AI” to “stateful systems,” referred to as moving from intelligence to what they term “artificial wisdom.” Friedman believes this evolution marks a pivotal moment in the industry, signalling a new phase in AI’s role in software development.
