PayPal May Pose Competition to Apple Wallet in the European Union

by admin

With the opening of iPhone’s NFC capabilities for third-party integration, PayPal is actively working towards creating its own mobile wallet for users in the EU. This development follows Apple’s recent decision to grant third-party developers access to its NFC (near-field communications) and Secure Element APIs, which are crucial for enabling contactless transactions as seen with Apple Wallet. While PayPal has not officially confirmed its plans for developing a mobile wallet in response to these new APIs, recent statements from the company strongly suggest that such an initiative is underway.

In a July 30 earnings call discussing Q2 results, PayPal’s CEO Alex Chriss hinted at the company’s potential to harness the newly accessible NFC technologies in Europe. He indicated PayPal’s readiness to leverage these changes to expand its presence in the European market.

This is not the first mention of a potential mobile wallet by Chriss. In an earlier quarterly discussion, he more explicitly mentioned that the updates regarding NFC technology could simplify the process for PayPal to offer its wallet services across Android and iOS platforms.

Previously, the company has expressed its ambition to serve its customers in both online and offline realms, implying it aims to provide an integrated payment solution that spans across digital and physical sales channels. This ambition includes facilitating NFC-based payments via a new PayPal application.

The European Union’s new Digital Markets Act (DMA) mandates that consumers can select third-party wallets as their default on iOS devices, a move away from exclusively using Apple Wallet. This regulation is part of a broader initiative that opens more avenues for app developers. It includes aspects such as app distribution beyond the App Store, the use of alternative browser engines, and establishing interoperability with iOS hardware and software features, including those required for NFC transactions on iPhones.

For PayPal, launching a successful mobile wallet in the EU would signify a crucial advancement, especially considering its historical endeavor to penetrate the offline retail sector. Despite various efforts, including partnerships with major U.S. retailers, engagements with point-of-sale technology providers, the introduction of local shop payments through its app, acquisitions in mobile wallet technology, QR code payment integrations, collaborations for card-based offline payments, and development of offline merchant tools, PayPal is still looking to gain significant ground, with Apple Pay leading in several markets due to the rise of contactless payment options.

Nevertheless, PayPal remains a strong contender in Europe, where it was used by 90% of Europeans by 2022. However, Google Pay and Apple Pay currently lead the mobile payment space in the region.

When approached for a statement on its NFC wallet development plans and any details regarding its launch or functionality, PayPal opted to refer back to their latest earnings calls for information. However, further insights are anticipated during Alex Chriss’s upcoming talk at the Goldman Sachs Conference on September 9, where PayPal’s strategy for the EU market is expected to be a focal point.
