Parents Express Doubts Over South Korea’s AI Educational Initiative

by admin

Concerns are being voiced by some parents over the decision by the South Korean government to introduce tablet devices equipped with AI-enhanced educational materials into classrooms, as highlighted by an article in The Financial Times.

These digital devices are set to make their classroom debut next year, and by the year 2028, it’s expected that these AI-crafted textbooks will be the primary teaching tools for all subjects, with the exception of music, art, physical education, and ethics. Details on the implementation have been sparse, but the initiative aims to tailor educational content to accommodate varied learning paces, while providing educators with tools to track student progress closely.

In a significant show of concern, a petition has garnered signatures from over 50,000 parents who are urging the government to prioritize the holistic well-being of students over the adoption of cutting-edge technologies: “We, as parents, are already grappling with several challenges that have emerged from our children’s frequent use of digital technology.”

Expressing her apprehensions to the FT, Lee Sun-youn, who is a parent to two, shared, “I’m worried that excessive screen time could detrimentally impact their cognitive development, diminish their attention spans, and impair their problem-solving skills — given that they’re already spending a significant amount of time on smartphones and tablets.”
